WHAT IS COASTAL ROWING?
Unlike river rowing we row in the sea! While river and coastal rowing share many similar characteristics, coastal rowers have to deal with choppy and rolly conditions and often get very wet. Coastal rowing is a very old and unique world sport which takes place only on the South Coast of the UK. We compete in the Hants and Dorset league and race other clubs located along the south coast between the months of May and September each year. Most races take place on the coast but some do occur on estuaries, which usually mean flatter conditions.
TYPES OF BOATS
Coastal boats differ from river boats as they have a wider bottom, are shorter by about 8 foot and the seats are staggered. This helps improve stability in rough coastal waters.
Coastal rowing is done in different types of boats using oars (known as blades):
SCULLS (one rower using two blades)
PAIRS (two rowers using either one or two blades each)
FOURS (four rowers using one blade each & 1 coxswain)
Under 16 members must always row using two blades (known as sculling).
BOAT WORK
Although we have invested in new plastic boats, some of our best boats were built 40 years ago and are made from wood! In the right conditions they can be lighter and faster than anything you can buy today! We have to maintain them so during the winter months everyone lends a hand, from repairing blades to sanding and varnishing the boats. Boat work can really help to build club cohesion and is a great way to get to know other members.
